How to Run Music Through the Entire House

By Wade Davis

Being able to listen to music throughout the entire house is a definite advantage. This way you don’t have to have a separate stereo system to be able to listen to music where you want. There are several methods that you can employ to distribute your sound throughout the house. Here is a brief run through on your options and what you can do.

All receivers are going to have different options and capabilities on what they can or can’t do. Some systems will allow you to switch your sound to different channels with the simple push of a button on the front of the console. This way you can select which speakers you want to be played at any given time. With a single source system you will only be able to play one audio sound through your speakers.

If you own one of the latest home stereo systems you most likely have the ability to play at least dual options of audio through different speakers. This means that you can choose to listen to one thing upstairs and another thing downstairs.

One of the best ways to route sound to different rooms or areas through the house is by using a speaker switch box. This is a separate box that would be placed next to the receiver and you can manually switch the sound using this box. You would have to listen to the same audio source in all rooms unless the switch box has multiple receivers hooked into it.

All of the above mentioned aspects of pushing sound to other rooms would require you to run speaker wire or cables from the receiver or switch box to each room. However, some homes are equipped to run a computer network through the house using Cat-5 cables. If you have a home computer routing system, you can also run your audio using the same cables. The only drawback is that you can’t run your computers and listen to music at the same time.

The ideal way to listen and route the music to different areas of your home would be through a wireless network. Some receivers and speakers have wireless capabilities which will make this task much, much easier. If you can get a receiver and speakers that have this option, I would definitely suggest it.

Otherwise you can utilize the capabilities of your home wireless internet network and/or laptops by getting an adapter for your laptop that can run a signal to your home receiver. This way you can play all the songs on your computer on your home stereo system.
